Currently in Minnesota, Most individuals, including your children and anyone else you claim as a dependent on your federal taxes, must have health insurance or pay a penalty. As of January 1, 2015, employers with 50 or more full time equivalent (FTE) employees are required to provide health coverage to full-time employees or else pay a tax penalty. This does not apply to part time employees. However, many businesses do offer insurance benefits due to the tax benefit for them. MNsure is the only place you can apply for financial help to lower the cost of your monthly insurance premium and out-of-pocket costs. Most Minnesotans who enroll through MNsure qualify for financial help.
Also available to those who qualify are low-cost and free health insurance options provided through government-sponsored health insurance programs Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare. If you qualify for and enroll in one of these programs, your health coverage is managed through the Department of Human Services.
